Masami Iwata1893~1988 岩田正巳

Masami Iwata(1893-1988) was a Japanese-style painter born in Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture. After graduating from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1918, he studied under Eikyu Matsuoka and co-founded the Shinko Yamato-e Association in 1921, pioneering a modern approach to traditional Yamato-e painting. He was selected and awarded at numerous Imperial Art Exhibitions, and in 1961 received the Japan Art Academy Prize for his work “Sekibutsu” (Stone Buddha). He was appointed a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1977 and served as an advisor to Nitten.
