Taisei Sato1913~2004 佐藤太清

SATO Taisei (November 10, 1913 – November 6, 2004), real name Sato Minoru, was a Japanese-style painter born in Fukuchiyama, Kyoto Prefecture. He entered the Kodama Kibo studio in 1933, where he received the artist name “Taisei,” and made his Nitten debut in 1943 at age thirty. His 1966 work “Fuso,” shown at the 9th New Nitten, simultaneously won the Minister of Education Award and the Japan Art Academy Prize, establishing him as a major figure in postwar Japanese painting through his original fusion of bird-and-flower painting with landscape painting, known as “kacho fukei-ga.” He became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1980, a Person of Cultural Merit in 1988, and received the Order of Culture in 1992, and was named an honorary citizen of Fukuchiyama in 1993.
