Tetsuya Chiba1939~ ちばてつや

Chiba Tetsuya, born January 11, 1939 in Tsukiji, Tokyo, is a leading Japanese manga artist who spent his early childhood in Mukden (now Shenyang) in former Manchuria before being repatriated to Japan after World War II. He made his professional debut in rental-library manga in 1956 and entered the weekly shonen magazine world in 1961 with "Chikai no Makyu." His major works include "Ashita no Joe" (with writer Takamori Asao), "Harris no Kaze," "Notari Matsutaro," and "Ashita Tenki ni Naare," which collectively shaped postwar boys' and seinen manga. He received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2002, was named a Person of Cultural Merit in 2014, and in fiscal 2024 became the first manga artist ever awarded the Order of Culture.
