Toshiyuki Tanaka1928~2006 田中稔之

Tanaka Toshiyuki was a Japanese Western-style painter born in Hofu, Yamaguchi Prefecture. While working as a teacher in Yamaguchi, he studied under Mukai Junkichi and learned drawing at the Kodo Bijutsu (Action Art) Institute, becoming a member of the Kodo Bijutsu Kyokai. He traveled to Europe in 1963, based in Paris. His style evolved from early figurative landscapes through Art Informel abstraction, and from the late 1970s he developed geometric abstract paintings centered on the circle motif, drawing inspiration from journeys across Mongolia, Tibet, and the Uyghur region. He became a professor at Tama Art University in 1985 and won the Yasuda Kasai Togo Seiji Museum of Art Grand Prize in 1986. He died on August 7, 2006, at age 78.
