Toyozo Arakawa1894~1985 荒川豊蔵

Born in 1894 in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture, died in 1985. He was a ceramic artist who trained at the Miyanaga Tozan kiln and worked at Kitaoji Rosanjin's Hoshigaoka kiln. In 1930, he discovered Momoyama-period Shino ware shards at Ogaya in Kani City, Gifu, proving that Shino and Setoguro wares had been produced in Mino rather than Seto, a groundbreaking finding. He built a kiln at Ogaya in 1933 and devoted his life to reviving Momoyama-period Shino techniques. He was designated a Living National Treasure in 1955 for Shino and Setoguro wares, and received the Order of Culture in 1971.
