Yoshio Shimizu1891~1954 清水良雄

Shimizu Yoshio (August 4, 1891 – January 29, 1954) was a Japanese Western-style painter and children’s book illustrator (doga artist). Born in Hongo, Tokyo, he graduated from the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts), studying under Kuroda Seiki and Fujishima Takeji. From the early Taisho era he produced illustrations, and after Suzuki Miekichi launched the children’s magazine “Akai Tori” (The Red Bird) in 1918 he drew the cover for 163 of its 196 issues, playing a major role in defining the magazine’s visual identity. In 1927, with Takei Takeo, Hatsuyama Shigeru and others, he co-founded the Japan Doga Artists Association.
